To the west coast, the photo opportunities are endless. There's so much on offer including tramping, mountain biking, the glaciers of the wild West Coast and the local beers and whitebait patties. Yum!

And of course the famous southern scenic route, including the Southern Lakes, Aoraki Mt Cook, Queenstown and Milford Sound, where every bend in the road will take your breath away. Literally millions of people come from all over the world to see our back garden, why not you!

Discover Christchurch City

Welcome to Christchurch, the doorway to the South Island. On your journey, you will discover endless natural beauty in this uniquely New Zealand setting, from snow-capped mountain ranges to lake-side vistas. However, now that you’re here, why not check out what the city of Christchurch has to offer first?

After you set off from our branch just outside the airport, cruise on into the CBD and enjoy the cultural delights of New Zealand’s oldest city. From restaurants and heritage architecture, to street art and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra concerts in Hagley Park, feast your senses on all Christchurch has to offer.

Botanic Gardens

As one of the city’s most popular attractions, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens feature the most extensive collection of local and exotic plantlife throughout New Zealand. With over 1.1 million patrons each year, these epic botanic gardens are a place of ever-evolving natural beauty. There's something new to see with every season.

Christchurch Gondola

For the best view in town, ride the Christchurch Gondola to the top of the Port Hills. This experience offers a stunning outlook over the city, the Southern Alps, Lyttelton Harbour and the Canterbury Plains. At the summit, you can enjoy a variety of activities, including shopping, the Time Tunnel Ride or a beverage and snack at the Red Rock cafe.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Want to see a Kiwi bird in its natural habitat? How about with no glass between you? At the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, you can get close to many of New Zealand’s native icons, as well as other local and introduced species. Walk around the park at your own pace and let the animals eat out of your hand, then stay for a Maori cultural demonstration or walk through the gift shop.

Your South Island campervan adventure

Ready to see the Lord of the Rings in real life? After exploring what Christchurch has to offer, it’s time for the main event. With the dazzling scenery in every direction, we lay out what the South Island has to offer, place by place. Read on to discover where our campervan hire can take you.

Lake Tekapo

Regardless of the season, Lake Tekapo is a sight to behold. Fed from a nearby glacier, bask in the reflection of the crystal clear waters, or visit one of the local cafes to gaze across this great blue expanse. When the sun sets, prepare yourself for a dazzling night time display. Known for its stargazing, local tours operate from Wednesday to Sunday, taking you to the perfect spots to witness our vast milky way.

Aoraki Mount Cook

Standing at 3724 m above sea level, Aoraki Mount Cook is the tallest mountain in New Zealand. On a clear day, it stands magnificently against the sky - a memorable sight for anyone to behold. For day trips to Mt Cook, we highly recommend the Hooker Valley Track. At an easy 3 hour return time, the Hooker Valley Track offers stunning views of Hooker Lake, the Mueller Glacier and, of course, Aoraki Mount Cook.

Hanmer Springs

Unlike most places, Hanmer Springs is ideal for both thrill seekers and chill seekers. The thermal springs are the perfect place to unwind after a long day’s driving, with temperatures reaching up to 36C in some pools. However, for those who are a little more restless, Hanmer Springs Attractions offers a whole host of high-octane fun. From jet boating to river rafting, to quad bike tours and bungy jumping, they have it all. The best part is, they operate from one location, making it possible to do multiple tours in a single day.

Marlborough Sounds

With over 50 conservation reserves, 1500 km of coastline and many hidden bays and quiet beaches, the Marlborough Sounds are a place to find your own piece of paradise. The perfect setting for an island hopper cruise, float between islands and coves as you drink in some of NZ’s most picturesque coastline. With the best south island wineries located in this region, the Sounds are also the ideal place to please your palate, as well as your soul.

This playground is one of the largest and most innovative in the Southern Hemisphere, making it a must-visit for families exploring Christchurch in a motorhome.

From impressive slides and water play areas to flying foxes and climbing nets, there are loads of fun activities to keep the little ones entertained for hours.

The playground's design is thoughtful and inclusive, ensuring kids of all abilities can join in the fun. There are sensory play areas, wheelchair-accessible equipment, and quiet zones for those who need a break from the excitement.

For parents, the playground offers comfortable seating areas and is conveniently located near cafes and shops, making it easy to grab a coffee or a quick bite while keeping an eye on the kids.

2. Experience Orana Wildlife Park

Offering a unique and engaging experience for families, Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand's only open-range zoo. This gives visitors a rare opportunity to see a wide range of animals in an environment that closely mimics their natural habitats. Watch majestic giraffes being hand-fed, come face-to-face with a lion, or even try feeding some of the friendly native animals.

Spanning over 80 hectares, the park is home to more than 70 species of animals, including New Zealand natives and exotic species.

For families travelling by campervan, Orana Wildlife Park is particularly accommodating. There's ample parking, and the park's layout makes it easy to navigate with children, ensuring a stress-free visit. Located within a short drive from the city centre, it's an easy and worthwhile addition to your New Zealand itinerary.

3. Wander the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

A visit to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens is a must for anyone visiting the city, especially families. The littlies will love the playground and paddling pool – the perfect bribe for allowing mum and dad to stop and smell the roses first. And if the roses are out of season, there’s plenty more to see. In fact, the gardens are glorious all year round, from the warmth of the winter gardens to the bursts of colour in spring. There’s also a great café onsite, so you can finish off your visit with a good coffee and an ice cream for the kids.

4. Punt the Avon River

Punting down the Avon River is one of those South Island activities that's as relaxing as it is charming, especially for families. Your friendly punter, dressed in traditional garb, will steer you through the heart of the city, offering a view of Christchurch that's both serene and a little bit magical. It's a hit with the kids too – there's something about floating along the river that turns an ordinary day into an adventure.

It's a great way to take a break from exploring on foot and let the world drift by at a slower pace. Ducks might paddle alongside you, and if you're lucky, you might even spot an eel or two in the clear waters.

5. Visit the Canterbury Museum

One of the top things to do in Christchurch is to visit the Canterbury Museum, especially if you've got curious kids in tow. Right next to the Botanic Gardens, this museum is a goldmine of fascinating bits and bobs from New Zealand's past. It's the kind of place where every exhibit has a story to tell, so the whole family will come out richer for the experience.

Imagine the kids' faces when they come face-to-face with a giant Moa skeleton – it's like stepping into a real-life Jurassic Park! And for the budding explorers, the Antarctic exhibition is a cool escape into the world of ice and snow.

6. Grab a bite at Riverside Market

When tummies start rumbling, Riverside Market is the go-to spot. Not sure what you fancy? This bustling hub of deliciousness is sure to have something for everyone in the family. Located right in the heart of the city, this indoor market is a foodie's paradise, brimming with local produce, artisan eats, and mouth-watering aromas.

Strolling through Riverside Market is an adventure in itself. The kids will love the sights and sounds, from the colourful fruit stalls to the tempting sweet treats. It's a great place for them to try something new, maybe a bite of artisan cheese or some freshly made sushi.

For those who love a good pastry, Bellbird Bakery is a must-visit. Their baked goods are seriously yummy, perfect for a quick snack to take back to the campervan for later. And for a unique dining experience, check out Dimitri's Greek Food. Their authentic Greek dishes will transport your taste buds straight to the Mediterranean.

7. Have an adventure in the Adrenalin Forest

If the family is up for a bit of thrill-seeking, the Adrenalin Forest in Christchurch is the place to be. It's an adventure park that takes fun to new heights – quite literally! The courses at Adrenalin Forest are designed to challenge and excite. With varying levels of difficulty, there's something for the cautious first-timer as well as the fearless adventurer. Imagine balancing on wobbly bridges, zipping along flying foxes, or navigating through complex aerial obstacles – it's a test of agility, strength, and courage. It's all done in the safety of harnesses and helmets, with expert staff on hand to guide you.

8. Soak in the warmth at He Puna Taimoana

In the mood to just sit, soak, and simply unwind? He Puna Taimoana in New Brighton is just the ticket, especially if you've been on your feet all day exploring. With five heated saltwater pools, each one a little slice of heaven, there’s a soothing spot for everyone to enjoy.

The kids will be all smiles in the lap pool, plus there's a steam room and sauna for that extra touch of relaxation – a real treat for mum and dad. And the best part? It's right by the sea. So, after you've soaked to your heart's content, why not take a stroll on the beach or wander down the pier? It's the ideal way to round off a relaxing visit and with any luck, the kids will sleep extra well that night.

9. Test your skills at Clip ‘n’ Climb

For a family day out that's equal parts fun and challenging, Clip 'n Climb in Christchurch is a must-visit. It's not your average climbing centre – it's a colourful, creative space that turns climbing into a game. Perfect for kids and adults who are young at heart.
