5 Ways to Celebrate Christmas in New Zealand this Summer

Heading to the land of the long white cloud and picking up an Apollo campervan for Christmas? We’ve got some great ideas for festive activities for you and your family while you’re on holiday this summer.

1. Visit some pōhutukawa trees

There are two types of Christmas tree in New Zealand – the pine tree and the pōhutukawa. Pōhutukawa are known as the native New Zealand Christmas tree because of their beautiful bright red blooms which can be seen on these trees during the Christmas season. These stunning trees are typically in bloom from mid-December to mid-January.

The pōhutukawa grows best in dry and warm conditions near the coastline, and while the tree does grow across all of New Zealand, it is most commonly found on the North Island. The pōhutukawa can be seen between throughout the North Island but particularly north of New Plymouth and Gisborne. These beautiful and unique trees are definitely worth a visit during your summer New Zealand road trip.

2. Christmas at the beach

Christmas falls in Summer for New Zealand, and a lot of families will embrace this by enjoying the beautiful summer weather and eating outdoors. Why not head to the beach and park up your motorhome for a festive Christmas lunch by the seaside? Rather than going for a traditional Christmas roast, enjoy a lighter Christmas meal of BBQ meat, freshly caught seafood, colourful salads and a pavlova decked out with summer fruits on top for dessert. Don’t forget the Christmas crackers and hats during lunch too! After lunch head down to the beach for some cricket or beach volleyball or have a snooze in the shade.

3. Catch a Christmas event in town

One advantage of travelling in a campervan for Christmas is that you can go where the action is! Across New Zealand you’ll be able to find lots of Christmas events in all the larger cities and towns. You can check out carols by candlelight in Auckland or Christchurch, head to a Christmas parade for a fun day out or find some local Christmas markets so you can grab some unique and fun gifts for your friends and family. For some itinerary ideas head to our itineraries page here.

4. Create your own Christmas carol fun

What’s Christmas without a great Christmas music playlist? Create a playlist, grab a portable speaker (and its charger!) and get ready to sing all your favourite Christmas tunes at the beach or your campsite with your friends and family.

Top tip: To be extra prepared, we suggest you download your playlist onto your phone so you can get festive regardless of whether you have great mobile phone reception or not!
Also, don’t forget to be mindful of your campground neighbours and keep Christmas carolling to a minimum after lights out.

5. Campground Christmas

Staying at a campground for Christmas? Many larger campgrounds will have an events calendar you can check out! From summer pool parties to Christmas carols and more, there will be something to satisfy the whole family this festive season while you’re on the road.
